Metrics Working Groups
The MESA Metrics Working Groups are focused on how manufacturers successfully measure performance and improve it. This is your opportunity to work with other companies who have succeeded with operations and business performance metrics.
Participating in a working group is interesting and not a major commitment. Generally the groups meet every few weeks in a teleconference and sometimes in a web meeting, and team members are asked to volunteer for mostly small-scale activities. For example, you might contribute a section of a white paper, review a survey questionnaire, write a chapter of a guidebook, or review and comment on how to improve the usefulness of someone else's work. All of the leaders and participants are volunteers, so we know that sometimes you cannot be on a call or get your piece of the work done on a tight schedule. Any time you can spend is welcome and appreciated.

Metrics Research Study: Pursuit of Performance Excellence:
Business Success through Effective Plant Operations Metrics
MESA International has just launched the third in its acclaimed Metrics that Matter series, manufacturers and producers in all segments and all geographies, are invited to participate and take the survey.
In return for 15 minutes of time to take the survey, respondents will receive the full report from this study, Pursuit of Performance Excellence as well as the 2010 report Metrics that Matter Revisited.
This builds on previous Metrics published studies in 2006, 2007, and 2010 with some of the same questions and some new ones. Please ask your colleagues, friends, customers, and suppliers to respond as well. You can send this link: http://bit.ly/oYWifJ or direct them to this page: www.mesa.org/metricsstudy
In addition to participants, we have solution provider sponsors as well as an industry council of manufacturers and producers guiding the research.

ROI Guidebook
In 2010, a team was initiated to develop a MESA ROI Guidebook to explore investment metrics and models and the steps to building and presenting a business case to secure investment funding for manufacturing IT and enterprise solutions projects.

MESA Metrics Reference and Maturity Model
This team is aiming to create a reference model for deploying performance measurement processes and systems that leverages all MESA has learned over years of studying this topic. In addition to the deployment model, this will include developing a maturity model that helps companies identify where they are in their progress toward an effective metrics program for production operations that will drive business success. This will be a generic starting model for metrics and practices that members can use to kick off metrics activities in their own companies.

ISO SP5 WG9 Plant-level KPI Standards Development
MESA has a formal category D liaison agreement in process with ISO to have full access to the working group materials for a new set of standards regarding metrics for production plants. This will entail reviewing and refining two drafts of standard metrics definitions. This is a new activity for ISO, and MESA is a partner to ensure these standards incorporate the real-world plant floor view.

MESA Metrics Guidebook Update
The 2006 MESA Metrics Guidebook focused on linking plant and business performance as well as best practices and how to start or develop an effective metrics program. In 2010 the guidebook was updated to reflect MESA's progress and research since then, as well as any new concepts in the market. The new guidebook will be released after full review in early 2011.

Metrics-based Diagnostics for Continuous Improvement & Root Cause Analysis
This working group will focus on how to use metrics effectively to ensure they not only track but also improve performance across all manufacturing operations in a company. The focus is on choosing metrics for the best opportunity to diagnose process and product issues and get to the root cause of these problems and fix them - or pick up on best practices in all locations. This group is also studying the aspect of quantifying improvement to focus on changes that improve business outcomes.

Benchmarking and Best Practices Exchange
MESA is forming a new partnership with Industry Week magazine. The concept is that benchmarking can help you understand how you stand with your peers, and when that benchmarking activity identifies areas where you need to improve, MESA's best practices can help to show the path. We plan to work closely on developing new programs that will benefit both MESA members and participants in Industry Week benchmarking and awards. This is a new working group, and if you are interested in these topics, please participate to help shape the program.
CHAIR: TBD - we are seeking leaders for this new activity now

Other ideas? We welcome them.
All of these working groups were started as a result of the interests of MESA members. If you have an idea about performance measurement and metrics programs you don't see here, please let us know and we can start up an activity.
