The investments made in production process and value chain systems are playing a larger role and gaining in value as companies move toward collaborative uses of data to support core business processes and new business initiatives. Originally these systems were acquired to support narrow functional requirements such as production order tracking, quality assurance, warehousing, or maintenance but in the new environment of collaboration, information sharing, real-time business, and broader compliance requirements, their value in the corporate IT portfolio is increasingly significant.
This paper will provide a brief overview of how Business Process Management tools can and are being used in the manufacturing enterprise to link the many disparate sources of value chain informaiton into effective business processes.
In manufacturing enterprises and, in particular, the plant floor processes, the role of real-time information is changing, becoming more significant as management teams think in terms of holistic business processes instead of departmental responsibilities. This paper will outline examples of how management initiatives focus on wider participation across the enterprise and value chain that is collaborative and near real-time. Examples of these initiatives include Lean Manufacturing, Demand Driven manufacturing Collaborative Value Chain management, Quality and Regulatory Compliance, Product Lifecycle Management and REal-time Enterprise.
