Dear
Members and Friends of MESA,
This
year’s MESA International 2004 Conference, “Driving Manufacturing
Excellence,” was a great success. From
engaging presentations by Bruce Richardson and Dick Morley, to another exciting
Manufacturing Excellence Awards competition, to the wide range of new technical
content we unveiled at the event, this year’s conference was the most
compelling in many years.
I’m
very pleased to report that MESA is back! And
as we wind down a very successful 2004 and gear up for an even more significant
2005, I and everyone on the MESA Board of Directors would like to give you a
brief update on our most recent activities and wish you a happy and healthy
holiday season.
Sincerely,

Kevin Roach
MESA Chairman
Conference Recap
If
you missed this year’s MESA Conference, you missed quite a bit! Participants raved about the obvious end-user commitment,
informative presentations and the opportunity to share ideas with the
industry’s best and brightest. Here
are a few of the highlights:
Manufacturing
Excellence Awards:
Once again, MESA and MSI teamed up to hold the second annual
Manufacturing Excellence Awards, honoring the year’s best achievements in
manufacturing. This year’s
competition did not disappoint. Congratulations
to this year’s winners:
- Manufacturing
Efficiency: Chris Towns, Pemstar
- Customer
Service & Support: David Bode, Showa Denko
Carbon
- Product
Quality:
Walt Staehle, Kraft
Foods
Presentations:
Dick Morley and Keynote Speaker Bruce Richardson kept attendees engaged
throughout their presentations.
Bruce, Senior VP of Research at AMR
Research, provided a compelling look at "Why Manufacturing Matters" in
his address. Bruce’s vast experience and trusted insight were a valuable
take-away for all in attendance.
In addition, Dick, who is best known as the father of the programmable computer,
provided a fascinating preview into the future of MESA with his presentation
“MESA, Manufacturing, the Future and You.” Dick suggested some interesting
predictions for the organization and its members.
What
some of the conference attendees had to say:
- “It
was very helpful to hear the case studies with ROI, numbers and stories.”
- “[I
received value from] listening to the end users/customers.
Hearing first hand their issues, concerns, challenges and
solutions.”
- “Invaluable
data.”

MESA has been working closely with ISA to
align objectives and points of view. The
MESA / ISA working groups are preparing to launch in January 2005.
The groups are 1.) Best Practices for ISA95 Implementations and 2.)
Manufacturing Operations Dictionary.

MESA
at the ISA Expo
Several
representatives from the MESA technical committee attended the ISA expo October
5-7 at the Reliant Center in Houston. Charlie Gifford attended the ISA 95
working meetings, which were held on the premises. Charlie and Khris Kammer
presented at several of the breakout sessions. Charlie presented two
sessions: "The MES Business Case," and "The cMES Value/Cost
Justification.” Khris presented content from two of MESA's recently released
whitepapers: "MESA's Next Generation cMES Model" (whitepaper #8)
and "Leveraging Process Data" (whitepaper #13). In addition to the
committee meetings and presentations, MESA also set up a booth in the ISA
"Emerging Technologies" exhibit hall. A large number of visitors
stopped by the booth, providing the opportunity for interesting
conversation about manufacturing software issues and trends with end-users and
solutions providers alike. Many of the ISA show attendees were
exposed to MESA for the first time, and are now interested in MESA membership.
MESA Discussion Forums
The discussion forums on the MESA website are continuing to
grow as more and more people participate. New forums have been added for
specific industries and for specific types of applications. These forums are
moderated by industry experts such as Walt Staehle of Kraft Foods, David Bode of

Inc.
Remember that the MESA discussion forums are available to all
(even non-members). Only a username and password for the MESA website are
required, and these can be obtained without MESA membership just by registering
on the website. All are encouraged to participate and inform colleagues and
other contacts in the industry about the discussion forums. It's easy to get involved - just click on the Discussion
